wall exhibition – 15M Madrid/OWS New York City

Proposal for exhibition and event – [See "COMMENTS" for Alan's Updates - PJM]

“Solidarity: Madrid-New York City – Opening a space of communication – graphic and mediatic – between OWS and Madrid 15M”

//////////////

working title:

wall exhibition –

15M Madrid/OWS New York City –

The Art of Solidarity and Exchange/Solidaridad y Intercambio

evening online exchange –

Una Noche de Solidaridad y Intercambio

a Night of Solidarity and Exchange – between 15M, the Okupa movement, and OWS

/////////////////

I want to make an exhibition of images and captions from the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City and other cities in the USA. This would take the form of large sheets of paper with color images pasted onto them, hanging in the atrium common area of Casa Blanca.

It would also be good to make an evening of live, online exchange between New York City and Madrid, where people could share the work they have been doing and talk to one another. This would be sharing videos, actions, performances, et cetera.

In organizing this exhibition I would work with 1) the Arts & Culture group of the General Assembly of Occupy Wall Street, New York City; and 2) anyone in Casa Blanca who is interested. To organize the live exchange, it would be necessary for some technical support from a hacker group. (I don't know if Casa Blanca has this capacity...)

I would draw from the “Occupennial” and “Ocuganda” projects (both OWS projects). The first is online, and the second is a wall show planned for Printed Matter, an exhibition space in New York City for artists' books. Both are being coordinated by the Arts & Culture group of the OWS General Assembly. I have an expression of interest from a key member of A&C group (Paul McLean), who is also interested in a media exchange.

Propuesta de exposiciones y eventos -
 "La solidaridad: Madrid-Nueva York - La apertura de un espacio de comunicación - gráfica y mediática - entre OWS y 15M de Madrid"
 //////////////
 El título de trabajo para la exposición de la pared seria:
“15M Madrid / OWS New York”
  El título de la noche de intercambio on line-
 “Una Noche de Solidaridad y Intercambio”
 /////////////////

hi Folks,

this is the outcome of last night's meeting with Casablanca CSOA --

I like the place and the people, but Casablanca just doesn't have the resources to do the kind of show i was thinking about... nor do i -- and it seems unfair to ask the A&C to pony up a lot of $ to do this... (300-400 Euros, ca. $500 to print a lot of images; also other physical issues in the space, open to rain, cold, unlit, etc.)

they are very nice folks and very sympathetic, anarchists (black and red) with loose ties to CNT; the migrating indignadoes from other cities have been staying at Casablanca – so they want to do an evening in late Nov early Dec with a video show and a small poster show (they think they can pay for 10 images -- we talked about A3+A3=A2, i.e. 2about11X17s to make one about 17x23, so maybe 10 of those)

very nice -- i will arrange -- but it is not circulating images as i had hoped...
and Casablanca can't do anything with internet at all...

so NEW PLAN
– I will go forward with the Casablanca evening, but I will also:
-- solicit mediatic exchange possibilities with a more resourced facility --
Medialab Prado (center city) or Intermediae (periphery) are good bets... I have no contacts there, so a "cold call" in person, followup with formal proposals – I could use more Madrid contacts, if anyone has them...
and the question for y'all -- Who/Where could coordinate such interchange on NYC end? "No Gallery" maybe? This would be useful to know when making pitch here...

-- prepare and circulate “paddocked” images from OWS USA in specially-bordered posters to the social centers here. My autonomous action which I plan for middle of this month is to – basically make and mount “mini-shows” which can survive and be distinctive in the visual clutter culture of social center walls – each of these postings will require approval by assemblies/committees in the different centers...

physical form of poster shows:
I envision an oval striped border with “OWS USA” in type inside it – cut to the oval, reproduce one per social center, one different each week...using a variation of this kind of thing – http://en.clipart-fr.com/search_clipart.php?keyword=border&page=20

the poster show would include captions and URLs for each image... I am envisioning a branded logo-typed circulation effort that could very easily be collectivized and more generally internationalized. I'll get on it, but I am not a designer. The border may have to be improved by someone who can do that. Maybe my pal James Trimarco can do it for $. Okay.

Hi Folks,
... Here is an update on "OWS" in Madrid proposal. (This is the idea to begin to do a series of exchanges between artists in O-type movements here and there.) I pitched to CSOA Casablanca early last week. It turns out they have no internet, so it is hard for them to support the kind of interchange program I envisioned. Still Casablanca wants to do a presentation about OWS at their “Fiesta” December 8th & 9th. We talked about reproducing 10 images from digital files in A2 format (about 17”x24”) for the walls; also preparing a slide show/video show of images from the OWS movement. I can do the wall posters,* and also a “powerpoint” of images, but canned video is a little over my head. Any help with a compillation of OWS video would be appreciated. Meantime I will continue to poke around here to find collaborators.
Tuesday 11/15 I have a meeting with the “A&C” equivalent in Madrid, in the Hotel Madrid (Liberado). (This is the new occupation near Puerta del Sol; mostly evicted families are being housed there.) I will pitch the “intercambio” project to them – still at this point relatively inchoate – and see what they think of it. A key question for them, I feel, would be the “comin' back at ya” -- is there some idea to include global images in OWS presentations in NYC?
Thanks,
en solidaridad,
Alan W. Moore

*Plan for wall posters – as I discussed with Paul McLean, i envision a kind of “corral” of images from OWS within a framed border. It would also be good to do some large single images, like the mandala-style statement of OWS, and maybe one of the “history paintings.” Paul suggested a coordinator for me to work with/through Occupennial, but this process hasn't begun. I would need high-res files for single image posters.

Hi Alan,

Some thoughts.

Just scanning the email, i'm wondering if you could assemble those into a bullet-point needs list. At this point it seems you are going to need a coordinator on this side to approach the artists whose work you'd like to "corral" (I think maybe we can find a better word ;). Also, it would be helpful to actually have some photos of the space in which you're planning the presentation. Although the exchange is still platformed quasi-informally, I think for the artists whose work you're envisioning sharing, it's fair to formalize the exchange a little more. Our show at Printed Matter is an open call, for instance, but we did produce an agreement sheet, even though none of the work was for sale. Make sense?

As for a video collab/reel, maybe this is also a more involved process you're suggesting, and the same points apply. I think it's possible that this proposal might encourage the videographers/filmmakers to generate a reel for just this kind of screening, which I would be happy to put Occupennial behind. However, that's not necessarily a simple/fast organizational enterprise.

Look fwd to your response.

Just to check in concerning my moves toward an OWS exhibition in Madrid –
I have just completed the "plastification" of the "Occupied Wall Street Journal" poster edition, and the 90cmX90cm downloaded "Declaration" drawn by hand... (they look beautiful!) We used clear plastic shelf paper, at 2 Euros a meter to make the posters sturdy enough to hang on clothesline in the open air courtyard and mount on the wall.
That will complete (more or less; may add an image collage) the material image part of the fiesta presentation at social center Casablanca Dec. 8 & 9th. I have yet to sequence the still images I culled, or download the online videos.
Today I visit the newly opened “BiblioSol,” the library of the 15M Puerta del Sol encampment, to acquaint them with my project. (See http://bibliosol.wordpress.com/)
I am heading for Copenhagen this weekend for the SQEK conference on occupations next week --
https://n-1.cc/pg/blog/owner/group:91603 -- is the schedule (we are coming to NYC 3rd week Feb '12). Maybe I can also help to set up something in Cph?
We'll see.
I am back for a few days Dec 15-20, then a couple days early January. I hope i can meet OWS A&C folks then...
More soon,

-Alan W. Moore
